STANFORD CARDINAL: SINCE WE LAST MET
STANFORD: (4-6, 11-10 72 RPI )-Thursday 2/11 8pm PST Maples Pavilion
LAST MEETING: 78-72 STANFORD (January 6th at Gill Coliseum)
RECORD SINCE: 2-5
BIGGEST WIN SINCE: vs. California (January 14th) 77-71
HOT HAND: ROSCO ALLEN 6’9’’ SR W/P 17.1 pts 7 rebs 6.3 FTA
X-FACTOR: MARCUS SHEFFIELD 6’5’’ FR W 10.1 pts 3 rebs 3 3FGM
WHAT TO LOOK FOR: The Cardinal briefly got their injury-riddled 2015-2016 season back on track with nice wins at Oregon State and against rival California. However, in their five losses since last playing OSU, the Cardinal have been beaten by an average of 16 points.
In a year when the PAC 12 has the closest margin of victory differential out of all power 5 conferences, Stanford’s recent blowout losses are the anomaly. Over the course of the past 7 games, Stanford’s opponents have shot over 43% in all but one game and have made a blistering 9 3FGs/game.
The usually rugged Cardinal have been beaten badly on the glass as they clearly miss Reid Travis’ presence. A lone bright spot has been senior forward Rosco Allen’s 17 points per game (including 3 games of 22+ points). Stanford will need more than Allen’s steady contributions in order to get back into the mix for Las Vegas seeding.
Freshman wing Marcus Sheffield has provided some badly needed three point shooting and scoring punch but Coach Dawkins will need point guard Marcus Allen to chip in more down the stretch.
Thursday night at Maples shapes-up to be a bloodbath. The Beavers and Cardinal are two teams that have to win ugly, manufacture offense, and get unlikely contributions as their rosters continue to evolve. Concerning for Beaver fans is the 20 offensive rebounds they gave up to Stanford at Gill last month (especially following Colorado’s 18 offensive rebound performance Saturday).
In what appears to be an evenly matched game, it will likely be extra possessions that help determine the outcome. Will Stanford come alive on the glass and expose OSU’s achilles heel? Will OSU’s press and traps turnover a steady Stanford team?
The weekend sweep of the mountain schools was a big step forward but if OSU is going to end the road drought this is the best shot.
OSU improves on the backboards and wins 67-64 at Maples. (Predictions 4-7 on the season).
